  input field box- up/down arrows malfunction

Bug description:
  This is a bug affecting multiple applications- 6 at this writing. It
  is difficult to explain. It also seems to be getting worse.

  So far: GIMP, Inkscape, XFCE SCreenshot, GPRename, AviDemux, and
  PyRenamer.

  Symptoms: if a program has an "input" field box with up/down arrow
  icons to enter a number of something, the arrow icons next to the
  input field box should increase/decrease in increments of "1". They do
  NOT.

  When pressing the up/down arrow icon instead of increments of "1" as
  it should be- the programs display a bizarre range of numbers. Instead
  of going to "2, 3, 4..." etc, it may go to 10,000 or something.

  GPRename when using "insert/delete" goes to a specific number: when I
  press the up arrow it goes to "256" each and every time. If I press
  the down arrow it goes to "-256" every time. The other programs are
  hit and miss, and the numbers when the up/down arrows are pressed are
  all over the place

  I CAN enter a number in the box manually, but doing it this way is a
  real pain.

  This is a fairly fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS, and this seems to
  have happened since the last kernel upgrade. Things were working ok
  before that.

  This is so bad it is rendering this OS unusable. I had none of these
  problems with Xubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.04 and I used all the same
  software.
