Thanks for the reply.

I fixed the problem by updating my version of 16.04 before upgrading to 
18.04.

As a side question...can you tell me why the 18.04 ISO file I downloaded 
from the Ubuntu site does not install the upgrade.  I have tried two 
different downloads of 18.04.1 and both get to the splash screen and 
just sit there for about an hour before I just gave up on it and shut 
off installation.
