Title:
  Unable to log in to general ubuntu desktop since upgrade. Only able to
  log in to XFCE desktop

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I was using gnome fallback with compiz. Now I can't log in with that
  either. Or any of the other desktops apart from XFCE. Have tried
  deleting all of Compiz and a few other applications that were throwing
  error messages, but nothing has worked so far.
