That sounds like an error from Grub legacy, and would have nothing to do
with the kernel. Are you using grub legacy, or grub2?

Title:
Kernel 4.4.0-93 fails to boot with Error 18

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After latest kernel upgrade to version 4.4.0-93 machine failed to boot
  with message

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

Selecting old kernel (4.4.0-92) it boots normally.

This is a virtual machine (kvm) running 16.04.3. Apport report attached.
(Couldn't use apport to send bug report as the machine is behind
a firewall that doesn't allow that.)

Several other VMs in the same host boot just fine with
  same kernel.

I presume this is a bug in Grub, but I could be wrong.
