I've added these hints to the S390X section of the Ubuntu Wiki page:
"Ubuntu for IBM z Systems and LinuxONE" - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/S390X

and split it up into the following two FAQ entries:

Q: How reasonably small can an Ubuntu system be?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/S390X#Q:_How_reasonably_small_can_an_Ubuntu_system_be.3F

Q: How can LPAR installation be done in VLAN environments?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/S390X#Q:_How_can_LPAR_installation_be_done_in_VLAN_environments.3F

Title:
Installation with many package groups selected is not possible

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  Invalid
Status in debian-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Installer version: 20101020ubuntu451.10
  Kernel: 4.4.0-62-generic

  Description/Reproduction:
Tried an installation with every package selected except the following:

  Mythbuntu master backend
  Mythbuntu slave backend
  Mythbuntu frontend
  Xubuntu minimal installation
  Xubuntu desktop
  Audio recording and editing suite
  Video creation and editing suite

The installer fails finishing the step "Select and install software".
I get prompted e.g. for the MySQL root password or the postfix
configuration, but the step does not come to an end.

  debug logs are attached
