You tried to install grub to /dev/sda, which is partitioned using GPT,
but you are booting your computer in bios mode. You need to either
install grub to a disk partitioned with MBR, or create a 1 mb bios_grub
partition on /dev/sda.

** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Title:
  grub2 will not create booter on fresh install onto wiped sdb disk
  where sda is windows

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  First attempted install 8 times using different settings in graphical
  utility. Attempted with 16.04.01 and 16.04.02, as well as gnome
  ubuntu image and standard ubuntu image. Using fdisk removed all
  partitions on the sdb disk. Grub2 is never able to create a boot
  loader on any disk or partition.
