I'd like to add to  the  other comments  that not only did
Gollum/Smeagol intend to use Shelob to kill the hobbits, but his
original motivation was also desperation.  Having come to the black
gate, he feared  the Dark Lord  would recapture the ring and then he was
be  without hope of ever getting it back.  Taking  the hobbits through
Ithilien gave him more time and would postpone what may be inevitable.
