[Bug 1623586] [NEW] Version in PKG-INFO says "UNKNOWN" instead of "2.0.5"

Public bug reported:

If setup.py lists a dependency on python-daemon with a version number,
checks for that version will fail because the python-daemon PKG-INFO
file reports "UNKNOWN" as the version.  This can be seen in the file
list on the ubuntu packages site:
