Thank you for your reply -- which was less than helpful. I am not a
complete dolt: I attempted to follow the on screen instructions and the
mess that followed was entirelythe efforts of the grub installer.
Perhaps you need different, clearer instructions. To actually get a
working system, I produced a second (clean) drive (sdb) and installedthe
system on that. The grub installer then installed another boot record on
sda, leaving the old one almost intact (if you try to use it, the system
loops just after thedisplay of "kubuntu" -- I assume debris from the
first crash!). Luckily the UEFI is helpful so all is not lost: to boot
now,I have to switch on, press F12 ans select which boot record to use.
All is not well with the current grub installer; it only seems competent
installing on a simple virgin system. I think that more thought that
more thought needs to be putinto dealing with updating existing systems
as opposed to installing alongside Windows10.

The installer presented a warning informing you that you booted the
installer in UEFI mode, but your disk is partitioned for BIOS mode, and
suggested switching to a BIOS mode install. You chose to continue in
UEFI mode. Don't do that.

Title:
Installer crashes trying to install EFI boot onto a normal (DOS) disc
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
This seems to be an installer silly. In this case, the install is
installing over Kubuntu 14.04. The disc is a normal 500GB drive with a
DOS partition table. The installer partition manager is aware of this
but the boot installer seems to be oblivious of this. This makes an in
situ upgrade virtually impossible. The computer's BIOS is running with
UEFI disabled. (This is the 3rd attempt!)
