The problem reappeared for a third time, but in this occasion I solved
it simply by a hard reset.

Curiously a second computer in my home also exhibited screen flickering
that was solved by this method. There should be a solar storm or
something.

** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu)
       Status: Triaged => Invalid

Title:
  grub no longer detects the internal storage device as bootable

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I just switched my computer on, and grub shown this error:

  error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.
  Entering rescue mode

  From that point my computer was no longer usable, and I did nothing
  for that to happen.

  Further investigation shown that the "/boot/grub/linux.mod" file was
  no longer there. I managed to repair the error by using a live CD and
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair).
