Moreoever I am unable to re-use these drives as anything else. They are
unformatable by any conential means that I can find.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Insert USB
2) Launch Startup Disk Creator
3) Create bootable USB with 16.04 LTS 64-bit image
What happens:
- USB is now bootable (sometimes) with Ubuntu, but:
- USB has no write capability
- USB cannot be formatted
What should happen:
-USB should be able to be used for storage as well as boot
-USB should be formattable and re-writable
