I have the exact same problem. I have experienced this issue already in
Ubuntu 14.04 and it still occurs on 16.04. A fix would be very much
appreciated

Title:
apport-gtk is shown as <defunct> in process list
Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Everytime I login a couple of crash report "System program problem
detected" dialogs popup. When I click on report problem the on one of
those dialog, it takes a short moment while information is being
gathered and then a second dialog pops up. If on that dialog I click
submit, then the dialog disappears and nothing happens.
When I then focus another f those crash report detected dialogs and
try to report another problem then the second dialog never opens and
instead just nothing happens. While investigating this issue I noticed
that `apport-gtk` is shown as defunct by ps:
root 25209 14.3 0.0 0 0 ? Z 09:29 0:18
[apport-gtk] <defunct>
I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will latest updates. It would be nice if
this could be fixed, so I can properly report bugs again.
