Public bug reported:

This has been a long-standing gripe of mine with Ubuntu/Debian
packaging.  On Fedora, if you install a debug symbols package it also
places source code for the package in a location where gdb can find it
without needing the use of gdb's "directory" command.  Is there a reason
why this can't be done on Ubuntu too?  If adding the source to the debug
package is really a problem (I can't imagine it is a space problem these
days) then the debug symbols could at least be made to refer to a sane
source location, probably /usr/src/<package> or similar, that one could
then apt-get source into.
