Title:
Grub update on 9/06/2010 failed to inform user of change to boot
  config

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub

My laptop updated grub recently, this is the package it updated:

  grub-common (1.98-1ubuntu6) to 1.98-1ubuntu7~ppa1
  grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) to 1.98-1ubuntu7~ppa1

In karmic and previous versions, whenever grub was updated, you would
get a window asking you if you wanted to keep your old version of
menu.lst or use the new one. However, on this update, I got no such
message, it just completed as any normal update would.

However, on reboot, my default Grub boot configuration had been
changed. Previously, before the update, I had configured it via
/etc/default/grub to show no menu and boot straight into Ubuntu (even
though I only have one OS, on installing Lucid (upgrade from Karmic)
by default, Grub would show the Grub boot menu...). On reboot those
changed I had made had been reverted and Grub was now showing the Boot
menu again. I had to go in and edit /etc/defaujlt/grub again and then
run update-grub. So, I am presuming the update changed my
/etc/default/grub without telling or asking me.

Since grub is such an important part of Ubuntu, the user should be
told and asked if the default config file, which is user editable can
be overwritten. If people have unusual OS layouts, this could be
  disastrous.....
