Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the 16.04 installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that
this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

  Unable to install bootloader under UEFI

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  There are similar reports by other users, but they seem to be for
  older distributions.

  In my case, the installer failed to create a bootloader on a fresh
  lenovo y700 (after completing everything else)

  The laptop has two hard drives: a HDD and an SDD. I mapped the SDD to
  /, and the HDD to /home. I assume it was trying to install the
  bootloader on the SDD.

  The installer gives me no options to choose a non-UEFI mode after i
  decided to install under UEFI once, and it doesn't seem to let me
  choose where the bootloader will be installed.
