I'm currently rather stuck since any attempts to continue the
interrupted upgrade process with 'apt dist-upgrade -f' fail at the very
beginning, with

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Upgraded a precise server to xenial with sudo do-release-upgrade.  Got
  a bunch of errors while upgrading cups because insserv was deeply
  unhappy about init script dependencies (loops loops everywhere).

  I'm hoping ubuntu-bug is smart enough to attach the relevant /var/log
  /dist-upgrade/ log files.
