hi, thanks for all the responses, and so quickly. As a noobie, I really
appreciate it.

The install crash reported here ... I think I've figured out.

My pc has a SSD C:/ drive which houses my MS Windows 7 Professional system.
It also has a 2TBi hard drive which I've been using for linux.

Due to mistakes on my part, the previous linux (ubuntu 14.04.1) system
crashed, and I decided to bite the bullet and re-install, but while I
was at it, chose ubuntu 16.04.

That install is the one that crashed.

What was different:
(1) version 16.04 vs 14.04
(2)decided to partition the linux drive in half with two ext4 partitions
plus a SWAP partition vs last time everything on one ext4 drive.

After the crash in this report, I did another new format + clean
install, which then refused to boot up.

Logged on via GNOME terminal, did a sudo apt GRUB purge, and apt
update&clean&upgrade, then a fresh apt GRUB2 install.

Pretty sure the error lay at my end. The install was done from a UEFI
DVD. The previous ubuntu14.04 installation was done that way and had
worked, but threw a constant Error message every time it was booted.
That has now stopped.
Pretty sure the boot sector on the C: drive is BIOS/EFI, which may have
caused interference.
This time I still used a UEFI DVD, and did the re-install of GRUB on my
2TBi, D: drive, set that as 1st boot priority. That works fine now too
with no error messages.

All is now well.
My apologies if I've wasted your time; I only sent in the report because
of the pop-up suggesting I do so. Definitely on a learning curve here,
and appreciate your help.

regards,
tom burkhardt
