Ah, thanks. Turns out it was oibaf/graphics-drivers that needed purging
out, and then it was happy to attempt the upgrade. Ta.

  Several held broken packages prevent upgrade to xenial

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Many packages (all attached in apt.log) are marked broken on
  wily->xenial upgrade. But I don't know more.

  ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Unable to correct problems, you have
  held broken packages.'

  I haven't personally put any packages on hold.

  Logs should explain more, I'm not sure what packages to downgrade...
