[Bug 1574213] [NEW] git gui and gitk broken after upgrade to 16.04

git gui and gitk used to worked fine, but after upgrading to 16.04, they
stopped working:

* git gui fails with "cannot determine git version"
* gitk fails with "cannot find a git repository here"

other git commands work like charm
