You are trying to install in EFI mode to a disk that can not support it
( because it is partitioned using the dos partition table instead of GPT
). If you wish to install in EFI mode, you need to use GPT and create
an EFI system partition. This will be done for you automatically if you
choose the option to install using the entire hard disk rather than
"something else" and manually partitioning the disk.

Title:
install of 16.04 fails at installation of grub2
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Installer initially informed me of an issue regarding UEFI being
unable to install. However on reboot attempting non UEFI install told
me that there was no boot medium.
I then attempted UEFI install which seemed to going fine until it
reached Grub2 install which failed telling me I would be unable to
boot new installation.
