BTW, this is still the case on Trusty with the latest plymouth version
(0.8.8-0ubuntu17.1)

Title:
plymouth should warn when caps lock is set with "ask-for-password"
  command

Status in plymouth package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: plymouth

If one inadvertently presses the "Caps Lock" button and tries to enter
his password, cryptsetup does not (obviously) accept it, but the user
is not aware he's trying to enter a password that's different from his
  real one.

I flagged it as a plymouth bug, as it is responsible for cryptsetup
  user interface.
