[Bug 1493841] [NEW] installer crashes when it starts configuring hardware

Public bug reported:

every time i try to install ubuntu, it gets to the point where it is
trying to configure hardware then crashes and aborts installation. i
have been trying to install it for two days now and have made 3 bootable
disks and the error persists.
