I have resolved my issue: I had added a file
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/LD_LIBRARY_PATH.conf containing the line
/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1
The purpose of this file was to force loading of a vmware library: This
library apparently interferes with the operation of Ubuntu in several
instances.
