Title:
intrepid alternate install fails when booted from hdd
Status in debian-installer package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Intrepid Ibis alternate install fails when attempting to use this
technique: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromWindows
(CD image version at bottom of page) to boot the iso from hdd.
I'm not actually booting from windows, just using the technique to
boot the installer on a low-ram, no-cdrom computer. The drive is pre-
partitioned and formatted, so all I need to do at the partition step
of the alternate installer is to choose the proper partition to
install to, and set its mountpoint.
The drive is partitioned as such:
grub on mbr of sda (the only drive)
grub files on sda1/boot/grub
sda1=ext3 4 gb (working slackware install)
sda2=swap 1gb
sda3=fat32 1gb (used only as a temporary storage for the install iso)
sda4=ext3 13 gb (where I want to install to)
This technique boots the iso from sda3 perfectly, but when the
installer gets to the partitioning step, it doesn't show any hdds,
even though it's booted from the hdd. fdisk from busybox sees the hdd
fine. Maybe this is related to detecting the install media on sda3 so
refuses to partition/install to sda?
I can confirm that this bug exists only in Intrepid, because after
fighting for hours to get Intrepid installed this way, I tried with
Hardy and had no problems. Also, I'm positive that the intrepid iso is
not corrupted, as it passes md5sum and self-test (when booted in a
VirtualBox VM)
