Since you mentioned "recovery" I assume that you are using the "Device
-> Attempt Data Rescue" menu option.  If this is the case then the
required package is "gpart" (guess partitions).  The command to install
*gpart* on ubuntu is:

     sudo apt-get update && apt-get install gpart

If my assumption is wrong, then please provide additional details
because the problem is not clear.

  I expected gparted to see that parted is installed and then proceed
  with the recovery process.

  I have checked with sudo apt-get install parted that parted is
  installed.

  Still, when I open gparted either from the dash or by using the
  terminal I get a message that parted is missing even thou I just
  checked that it IS installed.
