[Bug 1019623] Re: update-manager daemon crashes

I had many of the same symptoms. I found a rec from JerryS to do in
terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get update

and "Software Updater" ran without crashing, and did lots of updates,
which it would not do before.

I cannot confirm total success yet. I am now at the stage "The computer
needs to restart to finish installing updates". But I want to post
before closing all my tabs for the reboot.
