This is no more a supported version; and grub legacy upstream is also
stopped, only receiving possible random fixes locally

** Changed in: grub (Ubuntu)

Title:
GRUB fails to create correct device.map in 64b 9.04 upgrade

Status in grub package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub

After upgrade failure in amd64 8.10 to 9.04 both upgrade and
subsequent hardware failures, booting from GRUB results in a Error 17.

I verified the correct disk, device.map, corrected the menu.lst (to
reflect change in disk order), and boot still fails.

I decided to verify that the upgraded could see the partition, but
when I mounted the upgraded 9.04 partition, ran GRUB to create device
map for verification, it contained only the floppy disk drive and no
  hard drives. See attachment.

  Additional details at
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7207375#post7207375

Motherboard was replaced after failures after the upgrade was
finished. 9.04 booted successfully but had errors before the
motherboard change, after the change it would not boot.

I corrected the menu.lst in /boot to reflect a change in order of
  mounted drives.
