Yesterday I ran 6 installs in VirtualBox. If I used automatic
partitioning I got grub-efi. If I used manual partitioning I got grub-
pc. I was rather surprised when I realised my real machine had booted
with grub-pc on a GPT disk without a bios_grub partition but it did.
The grub installer notices this because there are some messages in the
log
Jun 21 17:53:58 kubuntu grub-installer: Installing for i386-pc platform.
Jun 21 17:54:03 kubuntu grub-installer: grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible.
Jun 21 17:54:03 kubuntu grub-installer: grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
Jun 21 17:54:03 kubuntu grub-installer: Installation finished. No error reported.
Jun 21 17:54:03 kubuntu grub-installer: info: grub-install ran successfully
I have the latest installation that resulted in grub-pc frozen before
reboot in VirtualBox so I will post evidence from there.
Here is the syslog

Title:
Install in UEFI mode installs grub-pc
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Installing Kubuntu 15.04 to a self built machine with Gigabyte GA-
F2A85X-UP4 motherboard with new 4TB disk.
Got machine to boot DVD in UEFI mode and when into "Try Ubuntu" mode
so that I could check it was running in UEFI. Then hit "Install
Kubuntu". Used manual partitioning, created new partition table and
set up partitions, including EFI. Completed install and rebooted.
Machine booted OK but when checked it was not running in EFI mode.
Disk had been formatted as GPT, EFI partition created and mounted but
empty. grub-pc had been installed, not grub-efi.
I manually removed grub-pc and installed grub-efi, plus a few tweaks,
and everything then OK.
