Thanks very much for the quick reply. That is what I suspected, but
filed the bug in case this was actually a problem. I am now creating a
USB thumb-drive start-up disk. I should point out that the instructions
on the page
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu
Are only for Unity. I am using the older gnome-like interface (I think
it's called gnome-flashback). It would be useful to include the one line
stating that gtk-usb-creator is the analog command for use in that
environment.
Again, thanks for being so prompt. You saved me worry about my hard
drive being at fault.
