Thanks for reporting this issue.

I found a similar bug report in Debian, so I have attached a bug watch.
Looks like there was some work towards packaging a newer version, though
nothing recently. :/

Title:
Using wrong repo and homepage, rather out of date.

Status in fontforge package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in fontforge package in Debian:
  Unknown

Bug description:
FontForge is now being developed on github, so the homepage for the
package should be updated to http://fontforge.github.io/ and the new
repo is at https://github.com/fontforge/fontforge/ . From the name of
the files, the version in Wily is patched code from 2012, which is
rather old. Simply updating to the newer code may fix a number of
other bugs reported against the FontForge package as well, as there
have been numerous bug fixes in the interim.
