Title:
package libmpfr4 3.0.0-2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: no
package named `libmpfr4' is installed, cannot configure

Status in mpfr4 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
This package failed on upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10
I am a relatively new user of Linux and Ubuntu but have finally realised that many of the package problems being presented on screen are not really bugs. The ubuntu team may need to consider a means of separating the screen reporting of simple upgrade errors caused by packages that have already been installed and errors that can actually cause failures. The bugs I reported in #658037, 658039, 658040, 658043, 658049 and 658053 do not appear to be bugs at all and I have now dismissed them. I am sorry that I have raised unnecessary reports. As many package problems are being reported on my screen, I am now cancelling them (16 so far) when I can determine that they are not bugs but this particular report may be something more serious.
Please note that the actual upgrade process did not run well. The upgrade install window stopped with 38 minutes to go although all the the processes appeared to continue OK. The only way I knew that the upgrade had completed was by viewing the terminal window below. I exited out of it but the upgrade window hung and did not insist that I reboot. When I did reboot. I had no keyboard or mouse and could not log in at the GUI login screen. I rebooted again and ran the safe option which appeared to fix the keyboard and mouse. On the third boot, the normal option was selected but 10.10 would only boot up in terminal mode. I finally got 10.10 going with the low-res option which is how I am raising this report.
