Some time ago I had a similar issue, for some reason the installer would
not automatically unmount earlier created still active/ mounted
partitions (older test installations), and would later report an error
or simply fail to proceed, back then it somehow worked to go a step
back, reinit hardware and disk detection after which as far as I can
remember it would come up with a prompt to unload active partitions and
you could continue partitioning.

Title:
PPC - ubiquity does not split and resize partitions when told to
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
When told to instal the new system along side the old system, a window
pops up where the new and old partitions can be sized. Ubiquity seems
to do nothing after that, it just sits there with the disc mouse
pointer spinning. Checking with Menu->Accessories->Disks shows that
the old partitioning remains unchanged even after many minutes.
