This has been fixed in Aptitude's Git repository as well as in Debian
Experimental. Will be fixed in Aptitude 0.7.1, i.e. the next upload of
Aptitude to Debian Unstable.

** Changed in: aptitude (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Fix Committed

Title:
aptitude package name text scrambled on certain packages

Status in aptitude package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in aptitude package in Debian:
  Unknown

Bug description:
Especially in 'Resolve Dependencies' view, i've noticed over the past
week or two, the package names are replaced with garbled text.
Pressing 'up' or 'down' re-scrambles the text in a consistent way --

it will look something like :

  P&i U (this should be cups-filters-core-drivers)
  cups-filters
  cups-pk-helper
  cups-ppdc
  P^^ ~U (this should be cups-server-common)
  encryptfs-utils
YR U (this should be gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.0)

If you hit up twice, and down twice, the scrambled text that was there
to start with shows up again -- it's a deterministic stramble of some
  kind.

Other places where the name of the package should show up, the package
name shows up correctly -- it's just in the actual list of package
  names which is scrambled.

  Scrambled text contains uppercase, lowercase, @, ^, ~, `, \, numbers,
