In case anyone else ends up here or anyone is still following this:

  1) it may help to pull the stick out and back in, I have had this help many times
  2) some other programs mess up the partion and or format of the stick, so you can use the USB Formatter first to fix it. I format to fat and it fixes everything then use USB Writer.

Attention Rob and anyone esle using 1.2.2:

This version has serious problems see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1402072 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1410256

1.2.1 worked fine for me but is hard to get back to if you are running
Mint Mate 17.1, Cinnamon 17.1 wasn't so hard but best solution is to get
1.2.3

Title:
usb image writer does not let me choose a USB

Status in The Linux Mint Distribution:
  New
Status in usb-creator package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Am trying to create a USB image of Linux Mint 16 in order to install
it on a different machine. I am using the USB Image Writer from the
Linux Mint menu. I can select the image I want to write to the USB
(linuxmint-16-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso), but the drop-down arrow to the
right is inactive - I cannot select the USB to which I want to write
  the image!

I am currently running LInux Mint 16 (64-bit) Cinnamon.
