I was setting up now a new 12.04 client and installed 5 repos and after
that 5 software packages. (just for testing) On this virtual machine I
did not get an error message during upgrade. I will try that soon on
another (but real) machine with  ~ 20 repos and hundreads of software
packages from repos. If I find out sth. new I will write it here.

  Upgrading distribution to Kububtu from 12.04.5 LTS to 14.04- Could not
  calculate the upgrade: An unresolved problem occured while calculating
  the upgrade. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release
  version of Ubuntu *Running the current pre-release version *Unofficial
  software packages not provided by ubuntu
