Hi, I have proposed two patches for this issue on trusty:

With these two patches I can erase the usb stick successfully in below situations on trusty:
1. dos partition table and at least one partition
2. dos partition table without any partition
3. no partition table

For anyone who would like to give them a try, please refer to bug
#1059872 comment #49 on how to build the backported util-linux.
