I did an installation from scratch, same issue, however, I don't see any
echoed text on the side...
Some other differences which probably are not related to the issue, I
use AMD graphic card with fglrx-updates.
My workaround is to CTRL-ALT-DEL, wait the system to boot again, press
enter to proceed at grub window, and then, blindly enter the password
(just a purple screen, no prompt or text anywhere)...

Title:
Unable to enter password for encrypted root after upgrade
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
I have recently upgraded from 14.04.1 to 14.10 on my Samsung R560 laptop. Everything works fine except the password splash screen during boot. I'm unable to enter my crypt password into the password box - kayboard works, but the typed text is echoed in plaintext on the side of the boot screen. Please see the image for clarification: http://i.imgur.com/x3cPMbk.jpg. In order to boot the system, I have to boot through recovery mode. I'm using nVidia binary drivers and I have modified my /etc/default/grub with GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1280x800 in order to see graphical splash screen. I've had no problems with that configuration on Trusty.
