Your comment does not make sense.  You initially said you were
installing to a flash drive, which your logs confirm, so it does not
make sense to say that the hdd checks out ok with smart.  The flash
drive had some sort of failure and went off line during the install, so
this is a hardware error.

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I have already had another system installed on a USB key drive, and
  now I tried to install Lubuntu to a brand new keydrive. Could not
  download updates, altough I was connected (it even said so). It would
  not allow me to continue with any option in the Partition-part, so I
  formatted the drive with Gparted and after going back and forth, I was
  able to select the "install" option.
