[Bug 1385006] [NEW] no admin gui after 12.04 & hardware drivers updates

Public bug reported:

After installing the last routine 12.04 update the update manager
indicated that due to the age of my hardware it recommended I update to
an alternative set of drivers that would still be supported. Once that
install was completed the HP pavilion a620n PC with 2nd hard drive
reboots into 1 of 3 user screens. When I switch the user account to my
admin account my monitor goes blank (no loss of signal) and I'm stuck.
All I can do at that point is reboot the PC. This seems to be the exact
opposite of Question #256095.

In troubleshooting this problem I came across the following:
