It looks like you tried to shrink the volume smaller than the minimum
possible size, so it aborted.  Partman shouldn't allow you to try to do
that.  I'm guessing there is something wrong with it's logic in
determining the minimum allowed size.

  auto resize failed.. went onto try the erase and install which crashed
