  crash on upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

Bug description:
  Tried to upgrade from U12.04 to U14.0 and it failed. :(

  This is the second machine to do this in my lab.  I was forced to
  install a fresh copy of 14.04 over the old installation on the other
  machine.
