I fixed this problem, but FYI I have BIOS (MBR) on my computer, not EFI,
so my solution might not work for devices with (U)EFI. The solution was
very simple. I just downloaded boot-repair-disk at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/ and burned it to a CD
(on another computer, of course, since I couldn't access any operating
system on my laptop). I then did the following:

1. Booted my laptop. It automatically took me to the grub rescue screen.
2. Inserted boot-repair-disk and then hit control+alt+delete so the computer could reboot from the grub rescue screen.
3. Once the CD booted up, I hit F6 for "other"
4. Hit Escape
5. Typed "boot-repair" (without the quotes) at the end of the command that appeared toward the bottom of the screen
6. Brightened the screen (At this point for some reason, the actual program appeared really dark, so had to brighten screen)
7. Selected the "Recommended Repair" option
8. Rebooted the computercomputer

This got Grub working, and not just once, but RELIABLY after doing
several restarts and shutdowns. Hopefully this will work for you.

Title:
Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol
  'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The update from 13.10 to 14.04 via update-manager broke grub for me,
which resulted in the grub error:

  "symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"

  on startup.

To fix the problem I had to boot to my persisting Ubuntu installation
(e.g. using Super Grub Disk) and had to reinstall grub on my boot
  partition: "sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sdx"
