So it needs its own patition for boot. Got ya. I thought this had been
fixed in Grub 2. I wasn't aware it was still an issue.
The installer should not offer other drives up as install options on prompt
after it fails. This is completely misleading if it's just going to go
fatal.

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Attempted install on a system with Ubuntu 13.10 on it previously.
Could not install grub to ?dev/sda.
Used the drop down menu to select other drives and installation failed
each time.
Installing 14.04 from a USB drive on 64-bit intel sysemt with an X85
Bridge on the motherboard. Previously had issues loading the install
dialog in 13.10 and 13.04 when more than one drive was present.
