It's not a bug - you just can't do what you want to. Qt uses an internal
class as the layout for a QDockWidget. It assumes (and doesn't check)
that its layout is a valid instance of that class.

Title:
Cannot remove a layout on a QDockWidget
Status in “python-qt4” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
With PyQt4, it seems impossible to remove the default layout from a
QDockWidget.
I need to remove the default QLayout widget so I can add a new layout
(Qt won't let you add a new one while another one exists).
The attached script contains a minimal example that tries four
different strategies to remove the old layout. all of them segfault.
