It was a USB problem.  I simply switched the USBs around in their
sockets and the install completed without error.

The config that worked for me (reason not known) was as follows;

USB 2.0 Slot 0 - Ubuntu Image
USB 2.0 Slot 1 - Target Master HD
USB 3.0 Slot 0 - WIFI
USB 3.0 Slot 1 - Keyboard
