Title:
rsync consumes a lot of RAM on 11.04 64 bits (Memory Leak?)

Status in “rsync” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I have a Dell R900 with Ubuntu 11.04 x64 recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64.
I have notice that doing an rsync from the server to a external USB HD consumes about 10 Gb of ram. The server has 128 Gb of ram installed. The rsync never finish and the process just dies with

rsync error: error allocating core memory buffers (code 22)

I notice the memory consumption running

  sudo pmap -d "rsync pid"

The memory usage keeps growing and growing until the process get
killed. I also notice that a Bacula backup I had set up on the sever
before the upgrade, started to fail after upgrading to 11.04. The
bacula process is having memory issues too. The kernel I'm using is
2.6.38-8-server x86_64. Before upgrading to 11.04 the backup and the
rsync process never failed at all.

On a side note, I tried the very same rsync on an older Dell server we
have with 11.04 32 bits. This server has only 8 Gb of RAM and to my
surprise, the rsync finished with no problems at all the kernel on
this server is 2.6.38-8-generic-pae i686. pmap reported no more than
700 Mb of memory usage for the rsync process.

I tried the same rsync on a desktop with 11.04 x64 with 6 Gb of RAM
and the rsync failed again making the desktop crash. The desktop has
the 2.6.38-11-generic x86_64 kernel installed. I also decided to try
the 32 bits version of 11.04 on a desktop and the rsync finished just
  fine on that one too.

In summary, the rsync worked on: 11.04 2.6.38-8-generic-pae i686 and
  failed on: 11.04 2.6.38-8-server x86_64

With 10.04 x64 the R900 never had an issue at all. RAM is not a
  limitation on this one either.

Is there a big memory leak on 11.04 x64?

  Please excuse my English.

Thanks a lot for your comments on this.
