  Cannot install updates; Synaptic reports no "desktop" is installed
  (ubuntu-desktop is installed)

Bug description:
  Fresh install of 12.04. After a difficult install of Evolution (it
  would not run and I removed it and re-installed it several times using
  the Ubuntu Software Centre), updates would not install properly.

  I receive the message, "Not all updates can be made. Do you want to
  proceed with a partial update?" When I accept a partial update, I get
  the message, "You do not have ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, or
  edubuntu-desktop installed." I have ubuntu-desktop installed. Re-
  installing ubuntu-desktop does not do anything.
