You have been subscribed to a public bug:
In /etc/cron.daily/apt, the first few lines tell you how to configure
automatic updates:
# This file understands the following apt configuration variables:
# Values here are the default.
# Create /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/02periodic file to set your preference.
This is however completely wrong, since the correct filename (installed
for example by the update-notifier-common package) is actually
10periodic! 10periodic is also the file mentioned on the Wiki pages on
how to set up automatic updates:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticSecurityUpdates
Please don't cause unneccessary confusion by referencing to a file that
is at least FIVE YEARS (see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1940284 - someone complaining
about this weirdness in 2009) out of date.
