I was still get 'malformed file' on each cold boot.
And i got the idea to check, with gparted, how was set the boot flag as the system boot on sda:
- boot flag was set on sdb : with the latest grub2 i am getting the
error 'malformed file'. This was not an issue with the previous grub
2.02~beta2-8
- changing the boot flag to the sda hdd which is the bios booting on:
and now the error is gone.
On that system cgroup-lite cant be blamed as it has never been
installed. So its a grub2 regression as that error, with the same boot
flag on sdb, was not seen before the latest grub2 revision.

Title:
[Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
I have just upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04
Since the upgrade, when I boot up, the process stops and the normal
grub screen is replaced after a short while by a message saying
"error: malformed file, press any key to continue"
Pressing a key allows booting to continue.
Someone else who experienced this found that the problem went away
after having re-installed grub. I tried this but this did not resolve
the problem for me.
synaptic reports the grub package as 2.02~beta2-9
