This worked for me in 14.04:

  cp /usr/share/app-install/desktop/vim-gui-common\:gvim.desktop
~/.local/share/applications/

Title:
Gvim launcher doesn't appear in dash; appears in launcher with bad
  icon

Status in “vim” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After installing vim-gnome a shortcut to Gvim text editor is not
available in the dash. After starting it (e.g. Alt-F2 -> 'gvim') the
icon it appears with in the launcher is not pretty. This is a
  regression from Ubuntu 11.04.

/usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop exists in 11.10 and the only
difference between this and the same file in 11.04 is:

  $ diff 11.10/gvim.desktop 11.04/gvim.desktop
  75c75
  < Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/vim.svg
  ---
  > Icon=vim

Furthermore, the icon used in 11.04 also exists in 11.10.
